A department store and market hall in Cheb on the site of a former moat at the edge of the historical centre of Cheb, where a green belt runs by the town’s main avenue. The project underlines the original route of the moat and replaces the current, outdated Prior store with a larger shopping centre with space for short-term farmers’ markets and a car park close to the centre.

The structure takes up a whole block, closes off the green belt and is right next to the main pedestrian avenue. The form is selected as a variation on a development of compact Gothic houses that supplements the town’s disturbed structure. The uniformity of contemporary shopping centres is replaced by a standout design system that creates a clear character for the building and adapts it to the scale of the surrounding development.
