Pedestrian bridge over Mže river

project type | design studio CTU
location | Plzeň
date | 2015
supervision | Sarka Malosikova, Josef Madr

A new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists across the Mže river in Plzeň is proposed as a replacement for the former footbridge. The location lies along the axis connecting the city’s central square on the river’s left bank to the promenade in the town park on the right bank. The bridge has several pathways on the right bank linking different elevations. The components of the structural box elements and necessary height are hidden between these pathways thus allowing for the slender visual profile of the bridge.

The differences in elevation along the paths make the space ideal for sitting. The bridge is not only a structure to convey pedestrian traffic over the river but also a place to relax with a “park bench” where you can enjoy an undisturbed view of the river.

Wrapped in weatherproof steel, the form is intended not only as a functional structure but also as a seductive site-specific artwork element.
